4. Scanner Features & Tests

Photo Scanning

As a multi-function printer, the Canon PIXMA MP760 goes beyond traditional photo printing by allowing you to scan images from hardcopy such as photographs, books, newspaper, magazines, as well as from color and b&w slides and 35mm film negatives. Unique to the MP760 is the ability to make photo prints directly from negatives and slides without connecting to - or turning on a computer.

The MP760 also includes OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software from ScanSoft which will take scanned images (articles, spreadsheets, word documents, and any other printed material) and automatically convert the scanned "graphic" into TEXT, which can easily be imported into your word processing or spreadsheet application for formatting and editing. This feature worked great in our tests and can save hours of retyping.

In testing the OCR software, it only took 53 seconds to scan a document directly into Microsoft Word. You can also do batch scanning to save even more time. Batch scanning allows you to scan multiple pages in succession. Once all of the documents have been scanned, OmniPage will convert all of the these pages to text - without interruption. Batch scanning took just 20 seconds to scan each page. Once all the pages were scanned, we just highlighted the page names and clicked the button labeled "2" on the top bar. In batch mode, it took OmniPage SE 2.0 approximately 26 seconds per page to convert the image to text.

The Canon MP760 is very quick when scanning photographs or other hardcopy, but slows down when scanning 35mm film negatives and slides due to the higher resolution settings needed.  I was able to scan a full 7.5" x 10.25" magazine cover at 300dpi resolution in only 34.79 seconds. This scanned page created a 2250 x 3075 resolution (6.9-megapixel) file.  When scanning the same page at 600dpi the scan took 2 minutes, 24 seconds and created a huge 27.7 megapixel file (4500 x 6150.) Nothing beats high resolution scanning when you need big image files for printing enlargements.

As mentioned above, the Canon MP760 will scan 35mm film negatives as well as slides using adapters included with the printer.   You can use the included MP Navigator software or the ScanGear software to scan images into your computer - or you may use the "FILM" button located on the front panel of the MP760 to scan directly to printed media. Canon has designed the film and slide adapters to store away behind the protective pad on the inside of the top cover. This helps prevent you from misplacing the adapters.
